Feeder anglers will often fish up to and over a hundred yards on such venues when targeting fish like bream and carp. Rigs and tackle have been adapted over the last few years to make it easier to fish at these huge distances with longer rods, bigger reels and weight forward feeders now growing in popularity. In this article we take a look at the tackle and rigs required for a successful days feeder fishing at distance. Tackle Rod Long rods of thirteen or fourteen feet in length are my favourite. A longer rod aids casting and means you can hit big distances with very little effort. Reel A big reel of a five thousand size or larger with an oversized tapered spool is the perfect tool for the job. Step 1 Start by threading the line through the eye of the swivel  Step 2 Take the tag end and wrap it around the mainline seven times as shown below. Step 3 Place the tag end through the small loop formed near the swivel. Step 4 The previous process will create another large loop of line as shown below. Take the tag end and place it through this second loop. Step 5 Moisten the knot and pull everything tight. The result is a small but very strong knot as shown below.  Simply trim off the excess tag end leaving just a few millimetres and the knot is completed

Although river fishing has been taken over largely by other tactics such as the feeder and pole there are still plenty of situations where a waggler will be the dominant method. Fishing a waggler on a river involves using a rig with a heavy bulk around the float for stability in conjunction with light shotting spread throughout the rest of the rig. Over the last few years wafters have become the go to hookbait for method feeder fishing on just about every commercial fishery in the country. The wafter is basically a critically balanced or semi bouyent hookbait. These baits had been around on the carp scene for a number of years before match anglers caught on and started using it to their advantage. Carp anglers and specimen hunters started off by using a combination of pop up and sinking boilies on a hair rig, These would be then trimmed down until they created a hookbait that was as close to neutral buoyancy as possible. In this article we take a look at how we fish shallow for species such as F1's and Ide. This is something I have based around the pellet waggler but I have refined the approach to target smaller more shy biting species. Tackle Rod A light float rod between 10 and 12ft is perfect for catching shallow on your typical commercial fishery. Reel With constant re-casting being an essential part of all shallow fishing techniques a small and light reel is essential. A reel of a 2500/3000 size should be perfect for this style of fishing. Mainline The mainline should be as light as possible. This makes casting easier and is less visible to the fish getting you extra bites on those really tough days. Tackle Rod Leeda 12ft carp feeder rod Reel Garbolino challenger 5000 size feeder reel Mainline 8lb Maxima Hooklengh 8lb Preston flurocarbon  Bait Groundbait The groundbait was a simple mix of liquidised wholemeal bread with a good helping of 4mm coarse pellets. With the river running faster than usual I dampened the liquidised bread very slightly by dipping my hand in the water and giving the bread a good mix around. This gives the bait enough moister to hold in the feeder without it becoming too sticky. Hookbait  The hookbait was hair rigged bread. I punched around 5 or 6 discs of bread with a small meat punch and then thread them onto a hair rig via a quick stop needle. The quickstop is a really nice way of presenting bread for bigger species and allows you to fish longer casts with the confidence that your hookbait is still attached. To learn how to tie the rig see the link below. Free running river feeder rig Bait Hookbait The hook bait was a tiny piece of bread flake squeezed gently around a size 10 kamasan b611. I squeeze the bread flake around the shank of the hook making sure the hook point is left exposed to hook the fish. Groundbait The groundbait is a simple combination of liquidised bread and hempseed. I drain all the water from the hempseed before adding it to the liquidised bread, This stop it from becoming too sticky and clogging in the feeder.
